The Deli is an independent deli and coffee shop filled with the most incredible food which is either produced in-house or sourced locally from a variety of independent suppliers.

Situated on the border of Islington and Hackney it is one of those places you are thankful to have at your doorstep - especially when they are open seven days a week.

We generally go there for on a Sunday morning to fill up on both savoury and sweet goodies for the lazy day ahead. Their selection of sourdough breads is incredible -and perfect for soldiers and eggs or french toast - and so is their selection of patisseries and cakes. They also sell great salads, warm and cold sandwiches and pies. They also have a solid selection of cheeses, charcuterie and olives...

Also, they sell the most amazing chewy sea salt caramel that will make you tastebuds melt. Make sure you grab a few at the counter, I promise you won't be sorry. I hear their coffee is utterly amazing - I don't drink coffee so I wouldn't know.

You can eat in as well - they have a number of seats outside as well as inside. For any foodie friends you might have, they do amazing hampers (for a certain price of course).

For our Sunday lunch we brought the following products from the Deli; Sourdough loaf of bread, an onion Focaccia, a sausage roll, garlic filled olives, a filled croissant with ham and cheese, eggs, pasta de nata, palmier biscuit, fruit and almond tart, jam doughnut, chewy sea salt caramel and a bottle of Belvoir Eddleflower cordial (all pictured above).

Dukes's is most famous for its incredible - and gigantic may I add - spare ribs. I will do a separate post on their dinner menu another time. This being said, they also do a mean American brunch where the portions are just big enough to finish. We went for the classic breakfast - two eggs, three strips crispy streaky bacon, Brazilian beef and pork sausage, diced home fried potatoes, grilled tomatoes, sauté mushrooms and toasted sourdough - and the not so-classic french toast - french toast stuffed with crispy bacon and cream cheese with loads of maple syrup (see picture above). Both were extremely good but the Mister frenchie's ravioli was a definite winner - different, unexpected and extremely tasty. Definitely something I want to try at home. The Dukes's breakfast was the perfect post-hangover breakfast but it probably wasn't the best nor the tastiest 'full English - or American - breakfast' we have tasted so far, but it is definitely up there with some of the best. This being said, the paprika potatoes were a nice addition.

Everything on the brunch menu looked so good so we will definitely be returning to taste something else. With the weather warmer and dryer, you can sit outside on the terrace (which is sadly mainly in the shade - but really who cares when the food is so good.

They are also very dog friendly. Although you will probably not be able to eat inside seeing as they have an open kitchen.

I finally got round to trying out Arepa & Co - the Venezuelan Deli at De Beauvoir Crescent. A great little place for a quick lunch - even better on a sunny day - along the canal.

Arepa is a traditional dish in Columbia and Venezuela. It is a flatbread ( somewhat like a pitta) made of ground maize dough or cooked flour prominent in the cuisine of Venezuela. They serve arepa with all kinds of ingredients - chicken, pulled pork, grated cheese, guacamole, avocados, cucumber, tomatoes... you name it, they have the filling (picture above).I went for the chicken, cheddar, guacamole and plantas (basically grilled bananas).

Arepa & Co also do some amazing traditional Venezuelan scrambled eggs which are delicious with cachapa - also a traditional Venezuelan and Colombian dish made from corn. They look a lot like pancakes but made out of fresh corn dough and taste a bit sweater than you traditional flour-based pancake (pictures above with the sunday special - traditional scrambled eggs, beans, pulled pork and cheddar cheese.

If you go on a weekend, they will automatically hand you the special weekend menu, but don't hesitate to ask for their full list of arepa and cachapa options.
